A seniors relocation is a move later in life, often after decades in the same house. To a single-storey home, a flat, sheltered housing or a care complex. That is more than shifting furniture: alongside the physical side, a move like this is emotionally hard as well. So a moving company for older people has to bring more than a van and strong arms: time, patience and consultation.

With a move later in life you want to know beforehand where you stand, and your children want that just as much. Below is what is fixed with us and what you settle calmly with the adviser, at your own kitchen table.

This is fixed

  • First a free home survey, a short visit of about 20 minutes. Within one working day there is a fixed quote, and that is what it stays.
  • Your household contents and both homes insured up to 100,000 euros, at replacement value and with no excess. A scratch on the new floor is covered too.
  • Dismantling and assembly of your furniture is included in the price of the move. So your bed is standing again by the evening.
  • Moving boxes free on loan, with packing paper, tape and labels included. No rent and no deposit, and we collect them again afterwards.

Everything is set down in writing in your quote; how the cover works exactly is explained on our insurance page.

This you settle together

  • What you pack yourself and what we pack. The adviser goes through it calmly at the survey; leave it to us and the packing is usually done within a day.
  • What comes along and what does not. At the survey we say honestly what stands a good chance at the charity shop or a neighbourhood group, and we take away surplus furniture if you want.
  • Which jobs you hand over to us. Lights and curtains, connecting and disconnecting white goods, hooking the television up and off, and if you want we walk the first and the final inspection with your landlord.
  • Whether anything goes into our storage for a while, for instance if the new home is smaller. That is possible for up to 12 months, under the same insurance.

Our adviser calls round free of charge, a short visit of about 20 minutes. He works out the cubic metres and goes through calmly what you want to do yourself and what we take over. Your son or daughter can follow all of it if you want.

Preparing calmly, with help where you want it

Within one working day you have a fixed quote. You get our moving boxes, packing paper and labels free on loan, and you sort things through in good time together with family: give away, sell or off to the charity shop. Leave the packing to us and it is usually done within a day.

No rush: we work at the pace that suits you. Your furniture goes into moving blankets, and where the stairwell is too narrow we bring in the moving lift, up to the 8th floor, through a window or a balcony as well. In the new home we put everything down where you point.

We put your furniture back together, which is simply included in the price, and hang your lights and curtains if you want. If you like, we leave the old home swept clean and take away surplus furniture. The empty boxes we collect again as soon as you let us know.

Your antiques are specialist work

Packing, dismantling and assembling antique furniture is a speciality, and one we have mastered. Your Biedermeier cabinet or Louis XIV sideboard goes into moving blankets, your china piece by piece into tissue paper. Art and collections of exceptional value fall within the insured amount up to 20,000 euros; if there is more value in the house, tell us beforehand and we make a separate arrangement about it.

What does a seniors relocation cost?

That depends on the volume of the household contents, the work you hand over to us and the distance between the old and the new home. That is why our adviser calls round free of charge first, a short visit of about 20 minutes; within one working day you then have a fixed quote, and that is what it stays.

As a guide: we move a small household of around 20 m3 within the region for about 1,400 euros; with the moving cost calculator you can work out your own situation. And what the market charges: platforms generally name 800 to 2,000 euros for a seniors relocation, according to comparison sites such as Verhuisoffertes. What does a moving company for older people take off your hands?

With us everything, if you want: packing, lifting, driving, dismantling and assembly, unpacking and leaving the old home swept clean. We take on the jobs around it too: lights and curtains, connecting and disconnecting white goods, hooking the television up and off, and the first and the final inspection with your landlord.

Our team usually does the packing within a day, with your fragile things safely in tissue paper; you can read more about it on our packing service page. We take away surplus furniture, and whatever is still good goes to the charity shop as much as possible.

Do you also move people into a care home or sheltered housing?

We certainly do; after almost a hundred years we are a familiar face there. We know our way around the Haarlem care homes and care complexes, and that makes it easy when something has to be arranged with the caretaker or the facilities manager.

Can the contents go into storage for a while, for instance if the new home is smaller?

Yes, in our own climate-controlled storage on the Izaäk Enschedéweg in Haarlem. Interim storage is possible for up to 12 months and falls under the same insurance up to 100,000 euros.

Handy if you do not yet know what fits in the new home, or if it is not ready yet. Part of the contents is fine too, a few pieces of furniture or a cabinet you have not made up your mind about; there is no minimum.

Is there any allowance for the moving costs of older people?

If you have a low income and little capital, the Haarlem council can sometimes contribute to necessary moving costs through the bijzondere bijstand; we point you the way with that application. Ask your own council what is possible in your situation.
